Wednesday May 23, Austin/Isla Mujeres, Mexico

I woke up early, like 4:30am, to clean the house and get everything ready for the trip. I didn’t need to wake up so early for a 10:30 flight, but I couldn’t sleep from being excited to go on our trip and being nervous about bringing the most luggage I’ve ever brought on vacation plus a wedding dress all the way to this little island in Mexico. I kept warning Jon that carrying the dress was going to be absurd and a hassle and that I would try not to be annoying about it, but I might be totally obnoxious and I apologized ahead of time. Jon was a real champ carrying the dress over his head to almost every stop.

It was almost nice traveling with the wedding dress because of all the special attention and consideration everyone gives you. During the travel I heard more than one woman nudge her man and suggest they get married in Mexico too.

When we got to our hotel in Isla Mujeres in the late afternoon, they showed us to a lovely poolside room---with double beds. I kindly reminded them that we were here for our wedding and needed a king bed. They were so accommodating! They gave us a free upgrade to a beautiful and spacious honeymoon suite on the beach with a king bed, a huge rainfall shower and bath, and a private patio with a private little pool.

Our trip was getting off to a great start.

That night we met up with most of the Merlins and had dinner at a restaurant on Hidalgo Avenue, the main pedestrian street filled with bars and sidewalk cafes. At dinner Deric and Len strolled by and we got a chance to talk with them too. Then we finished the evening off with a trip to the local gelato shop for some amazing hand made nutella gelato in a handmade waffle cone and a stroll around town. A wonderful first night.
