Costa Rica Day 3

We had to wake up pretty early for the ride, which was luckily much less than 5 hours. We had breakfast on the beautiful ground of the hotel.

Costa Rica is so full of interesting plants and animals. We spotted this cool snail on the plant next to us at breakfast.

Closer to 3 really. Although we had girded ourselves for really bumpy roads they weren't at all- This was really the point where I felt like a wimp for hiring a driver instead of just renting a 4 wheeler and driving ourselves. Our nervousness about the whole thing was a bit excessive. In the end I think the worst thing that could have happened would have been a wrong turn here or there. Next time we'll drive ourselves, or fly.

We arrived in Puerto Jimenes at about 12:00 and then drove another 2km to the Iguana Lodge. It was remarkably beautiful from end to end- To be honest, it stood in stark contrast to the places we'd stayed in Jaco and Dominical. The buildings all looked like they'd been built pretty recently and were really homey and charming. The front building (called the "Rancho")

had a library like space and several chess boards. From the Rancho, there were several paths that lead to the secondary building where we stayed. It was called the "Pearl"

Basically an open space restaurant with rooms on top.

Both the Rancho and The Pearl are pretty much directly on the beach. There was a bank of hammocks and chairs, from which you could look out at the immaculate beach.

The sand was the same color as the sand in Jaco, but much much smoother, and far fewer large rocks. From the beach, you could look out into the Golfo Dulce, and see the rainforest on all sides- it was stunningly beautiful.

We were given a tropical smoothie and a brief tour of the grounds when we arrived by a really friendly guy, Urius, and then shown to our room. The room was really good looking- apparently they had just finished redecorating (no windows, just screens, and no AC. . .8 degrees above the equator!). Shana thought it might get to be a bit hot, but in the end it really wasn't a problem at all.

There is lots of amazing wildlife on the grounds of the Iguana Lodge. Scarlett Macaws, lizards, frogs, dogs, cats, spider monkeys, howler monkeys and more. Right when we arrived we saw the Macaws.

At this point, we took a quick swim in the ocean and got ready for dinner. The food was really incredible- Huge curried shrimp with rice and palm heart salad. We met and had a nice extended conversation with a videographer from Hawaii named G.B. who was there with his two sons. He's currently directing/producing an animated feature in the style of Heavy Metal
